Text consists of 17 plates with illustrations from the life of St. John of the Cross. Each is followed by an Elogium in Latin verse and an explanation of the illustration and its symbolism in German. The titles of most Elogia contain a chronogram; that for the last yields the date 1591, the year of John's death
Those plates that are signed are after Johann Andreas Bergmüller. Most were engraved by Johann Melchior Gutwein, though the first frontispiece was engraved by Melchior Rein
First frontispiece (35 x 44 cm. folded to 16 x 8 cm.) shows a triumphal arch erected before the cloister church of the Discalced Carmelites of Augsburg in celebration of the canonization of St. John of the Cross, which took place Dec. 27, 1726. The second frontispiece shows a representation of Mt. Carmel surrounding the door of the church
